Sartirana
Home page
During the Roman Age it was already an importan
agricoltural centre, for its geographic position. It was for
that reason really important for Longobardi too.
When the army of Milano came into Lomellina they
conquisted this village too in the 1213, and about at the
end of the XIV century it is overcome by Galeazzo
Visconti that wanted to build the castle (in square shape)
together with the moat, towers and great walls a really
fortress. In 1462-1463 Sforza wanted to extend and
consolidate the circle tower projected by the famous
architect Bartolomeo Fioravanti; and they remained
the owner for sixty years about.
Sartirana and its castle got to Spain with Mercurino
Arborio (cardinal) until his death in the 1530.
The castle owned to Arborio dinasty until 1934, and
so to Duke D'Aosta Amedeo di Savoia.
After about ten years from the 2nd world war it became
private propierty.Today it is a centre of the Centre of Study
of Lomellina and Fondazione Sartirana Arte which organises
shows and cultural events of international importance too.
The economy is represented by goldsmith handicraft.
In addition to the castle, Santa Maria church ( 1486 ) has
to be mentioned as it preserved the wood sculpture
( Madonna del Socco , XVI century), a Crocefisso of
1400, the chor and confessionals of great interest.
Inside the San Rocco church in barock style (next to
the castle) owned to Duke D'Aosta, where are preserve
 the rest of the Family.
The first Sunday of September takes place the famous
" Sagra della rana" (frog party), where it's possible to eat
delicious speciality where " frog" is the special " guest" .
