Coming from Milan, driving round the Naviglio Grande, you get
in Abbiategrasso, and will find a crossroads that takes you to
Motta Visconti and Morimondo ( driving straightaway you get
on Ticino river's bridge and so in Vigevano). On the yellow sign
for Morimondo, It's written also " Abbazia del XII secolo ",
( Abbazia= abbey). The abbey, a Lombard historic monument of
great importance, of course it is not possible to make a comparison
with the masterpiece Certosa di Pavia, next stop of our travel; but it
is a right example of the old Cistercians monasticism, that linked to
its creed " Cruce et aratro " the religious apostolate of tilling the soil,
draining the territory and becoming the focus of the community. It
was really important for the develop of the rural population. Twelve
monks, guiding by an abbot found the abbey in October 1134. We
advice the tourist to buy, with a simple offering, the brochure about
the Abbey 's history, written by P. Paolo Cavallari O.M.V. The abbey
is located on a rise in the little agricultural suburb, in the Parco del
Ticino, deep in a protected fauna area.
